Giant ants, man, giant freaking ants! What more do I need to say?
The year is 1954, nine years after the atomic bomb tests at White Sands and something is stirring in - and under - the New Mexico desert. What starts as a police investigation into property damage, missing persons and sugar thefts ends in martial law for Los Angeles and a life-and-death battle for the future of mankind in the city's storm drains.
With its Oscar-nominated effects, Them! opened the door for a whole wave of giant, mutant monster films cashing in on the(understandable) atomic bomb fears of the 1950s Cold War era.
This film doesn't go in for character development or emotional exploration, it's all about the ten foot long ants... and the authority's efforts to keep their existence a secret in order to avert widespread panic (tactics which include keeping one poor witness locked up in a mental asylum!)
It might look a bit primitive by today's CGI standards, but Them! is a cracking sci-fi thriller that stands on its own merits and deserves consideration for a modern remake (although a better one than the farcical 1998 version of Godzilla would be appreciated).
