With issue two due out this week, it's no wonder that this finally made it to the top of the pile. Buffy Season Eight is Joss Whedon doing what he does best: writing Buffy! Georges Jeanty's artwork is very easy on the eye, but it is Joss' writing, particularly the dialogue, that transports the reader back to the golden days of Buffy ... when it was the programme to watch on TV.As an old school Buffy fan, naturally, I'd been rather nervous about her 'official' return, but this one issue shows that Joss hasn't lost the magic touch. Although it is very doubtful the entire original cast will ever get together again to find a new series, this Dark Horse comic is a more than adequate substitute.
While Marvel's vampire slayer, Blade, worked better in live action, Buffy Season Eight proves that she can hold her own equally well in either medium. Comic books, of course, allow for some large-scale effects that would have been prohibitively expensive and technologically challenging, but really that's just set dressing to the banter. At last, after years of generally disappointing non-canon comics, the characters are finally talking with their proper voices and it is a joy to be back in their world.
