Independence Day Dash!

Watkin's Glen, New York. July 4, 2007. Our truncated (by exam revision and weddings) Formula De season lurched into its third race - on the superfast American circuit and for a large portion of the first lap I was convinced that my team (Team Zerro) had the race in the bag.

We were leading by a significant margin, and we seemed to have found that sweet spot - the perfect rhythm to hit every corner just right, one roll of the die after another - but then we started to get cocky, seduced by the prospect of rolling the massive 30-sided die for sixth gear! First Whitey Whitehouse, from second place, skidded through a succession of misjudged corners and lost the grip on all his tyres and all his brake fluid ... resulting in our first EVER pit stop; then Damien Dash, half a lap later, from first, blew his tyres, spun the car and had to limp home in last place!

Nick (Team Flamer), meanwhile, continued his dominance of the track that had started at the end of last season, with his young driver Jock Saway, who took pole, and former World Champion, Antonio Wasp, who came in a respectable third.

Pete's Team Blue Clover boys filled out the lower order coming in fourth and fifth, no doubt slowed down by the magnificient, giant, homemade spicy burgers Pete had cooked for us all earlier and served up with potato wedges. I had one of my burgers smeared with the last remnants of Pete's stock of red chilli jam, in true Homer Simpson style!
