There is a trend in current flashy monster movies to use the scientific method of "throw everything at it and see what sticks" when it comes to storytelling. It worked with Underground, not so much with Van Helsin. However, both of these films I sat through and enjoyed for what they were.Blood and Chocolate, meanwhile, appears to have been assembled from the bits that didn't stick. It tries to do for werewolves what Anne Rice and Interview With A Vampire did for vampires, namely sex them up, and while this 2007 film has a lead actress who looks and moves like a catwalk model (Agnes Bruckner), she's not enough to distract the audience from this dull mess of a movie.
Eventually, after almost three-quarters of an hour of waiting for something interesting to happen, I had to admit defeat and turn the DVD off ... life really is too short! The film was so unnecessarily dark that it was often difficult to make out what was going on, the acting was dreadful and the special effects (people leap through air, flash of light, bingo! A wolf appears) were so basic as to be laughable.
I can't believe that I tried to persuade Rachel to take me to see this when it was on at the cinema ... I don't think she ever would have forgiven me!
There may well have been an earnest film in the middle of all this trying to escape, but I never caught of glimpse of it. What was delivered was just so slow and boring that I could feel myself nodding off.
For those who are interested: Agnes is Vivian, an American orphan werewolf girl, living with her 'wolf clan' in modern day Bucharest. She's supposed to mate with the alpha male of the pack, but falls for a visiting graphic novel artist instead. I expect wackiness ensues ...
