Matt Smith, 26, has been revealed as the 11th Doctor, replacing David Tennant in the TARDIS when the new, full season of Doctor Who begins the Spring of 2010.The only work I know of Smith's is his role of Jim Taylor in the two Sally Lockhart Victorian mysteries, Ruby In The Smoke and Shadow In the North, where he appeared alongside former Doctor Who companion Billie Piper.
The youngest person, to date, to take the role, there is a certain dark, Crispin Glover-esque quality about Smith - as well as an eagerness to sink himself into the role - that brings a definite level of excitement to the Time Lord's next regeneration.
I believe his shadier qualities will complement incoming showrunner Steven Moffat's penchant for the creepier Doctor Who tales.
Of course, I'll miss David Tennant, but I predict we're in for fun, different times ahead with Steven Moffat guiding the ship and Matt Smith at the controls of the TARDIS.

7 persons have something to say about this!:
I'm tickled that Moffat will be helming things, but Smith is a complete blank to me. I watched the 11th Doctor special (after downloading loading it). I can't wait to see which direction Smith (and Moffat) takes the Doctor. It's always interesting when a new Doctor arrives!
Good attitude. Doctor Who is about change and regeneration, thnat's how the show has endured. It will exciting and interesting.
Thus spake the spouse: "Aw. He's not cute. His nose is weird, and his cheeks and chin look wrong. There are plenty of actors in the same cuteness realm of Tennant. Why can't they get someone like him?"
Can't ignore the female £... :-)
Perhaps with a less "cute" Doctor there'll be less kissing on the show :-D
What's wrong with kissing? It was that slightly human element that got me into Dr Who in the first place! I'm with Darius's Mrs-there's nothing wrong with a cute Doctor...Matt might grow on me though.
Tim, I haven't watched the show much (I don't get BBC channels and never manage to keep up with it on Sci-Fi), but I'd heard rumors that Paterson Joseph was going to be the next doctor, the first black Doctor Who. It seemed like a pretty cool take on things to me (and I'd heard that he is quite a good actor), so I'm a little disappointed to find out that the rumor was untrue. Any thoughts or reactions about that?
Paterson Joseph is a good actor, but obviously we don't know the full ins and outs of the audition process. Perhaps he didn't even put his name forward, or wasn't available, or auditioned and wasn't what they were looking for.
I also wonder if there was the issue of him having already appeared in a reasonably major role in a couple of the 9th Doctor episodes. I really don't know how much that sort of consideration factors into casting choices. Colin Baker appeared in Doctor Who before he was the 6th Doctor, but I don't believe any of the other actors who took on the role had appeared in the programme before.
As to having a non-white Doctor, I'm sure it'll happen one day (there's no reason in the lore of the Whoniverse for it not to), when the right actor is available at the right time for the role.
The only 'type' of actor I would object to in the role is a woman, not for any sexist reasons about them not being able to carry off the part, but because it would clearly be "stunt casting", just for effect. The Doctor is a male, like James Bond... and we're never going to see a female James Bond now, are we? Or a male Miss Marple, come to think of it!
