It lay in my parents' attic for as long as I can remember and, in my childhood, my mother would joke: "Can you see the rabbit?" The joke being that the "rabbit" is, of course, the shape of the clouds and not an insignificant dark speck on a dark and gloomy painting. No one seems to know who painted it or even where it came from... as the guide on our recent ghost tour would say: "Ohhh, spooky!"
Rachel hates the battered old painting, but has kindly allowed me to hang it "for sentimental reasons" - on the understanding that one day we'll get it professionally cleaned and in a new frame. I think she's hoping I'll eventually move it upstairs into the gamesroom.
Personally, I love the evocative creepiness of it - conjuring images in my brain as diverse as Sapphire & Steel (people were always getting trapped in paintings!) and the Gothic tales of HP Lovecraft.
Thus, a couple of weeks ago, as I began to contemplate a setting for the dungeon I would design to challenge The Tuesday Knights, my eyes were drawn to the painting and a name for the dungeon immediately sprang to mind.
It may not have the resonance of a Greyhawk, an Arduin or a Blackmoor, but it's a start.

Wow. I love it, and think the idea of using a painting as inspiration for a campaign setting is genius.
ReplyDeleteI'll be watching......
Thank you, Greywulf, that means a lot! Cheers!
ReplyDeleteOne thought I have been toying with is to actually have the painting in the dungeon and give it some magical properties.
I have some ideas, but all suggestions are welcome... this is the first dungeons I've designed in about 20 years!
Yes, the idea of the painting being in the dungeon, persons trapped in it, oh! The sheer 1970's BBC play of it all!
ReplyDeleteI love it. It would be interesting to see the painting restored, but I wonder if that will spoil its charm?
Even restored I think it's still be a beautifully dark and creepy painting, just might be able to make out more detail.
ReplyDeleteBut that's not at the top of financial agenda at the moment anyway! However, when/if it finally does get restored have no fear HeroPress will hear about it first :-D
