The Head-To-Head Challenge...

This is it. The readers of HeroPress have spoken. You have cast your votes and chosen the two contestants for the final, head-to-head, Battle Royal to decide who is, ultimately, the Most Annoying Sidekick In Science-Fiction.

It's Jar Jar Binks (from The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy) versus Melanie Bush (from Doctor Who).

Versus

The final voting will take place of a week (can't really justify dragging this out for much longer, can I?).

The Final Battle! To The Death (maybe)! Cast Your Votes... One Last Time!

As always, the polling booth is open in the right hand column of the blog. All comments, of course, are welcome.

For those who are interested the runners-up were:

* 3rd place. Fergie (from Judge Dredd)
* 4th place. Wesley Crusher (from Star Trek: The Next Generation)
* 5th place. Ruby Rhod (from The Fifth Element)
* 6th place. Adric (from Doctor Who)

Fergie and Mel were neck-and-neck for a while in their leg of the survey, but the first leg pretty much belonged to Jar Jar... but how will he fare against the flaming hair and carrot juice of Mel in the grand final?

Only you can say...

7 serfs have something to say about this!:

  1. See, Who came back, better than before, after Mel went. But Star Wars will never survive Jar Jar.

"Jar Jar Binks makes the Ewoks look like ****ing Shaft!"

  2. The TARDIS's revolving door policy for companions guarantees that if you don't like the current companion, a new one will be along soon.

But sadly Jar Jar single-handedly shattered the verisimilitude of the Star Wars universe and pretty much ensured that I would never look at it through rose-tinted, fanboy glasses again. For me - who had had no problem whatsoever with the ewoks - the Prequels became just three more science-fiction films that I happened to like.

After Jar Jar there was no going back.

  3. It's probably just me, but I never found Jar Jar 1/10th as annoying as C-3PO. But he gets a pass because he was in the beloved "original trilogy."

Fact: in ESB, Leia turns 3PO off--and the audience cheers. A yammering, cowardly, useless character who is only there so the audience can understand R2.

  4. I think it is just you, snell! I don't see how anyone could have a problem with 3PO... I think you undervalue his role in the saga (and, anyway, Luke could understand R2). :-)

  5. Definitely Jar Jar Binks is more annoying. Mel wasn't great, but the original novels and the Big Finish audios have turned her around.

  6. As Kelvin said, Doctor Who successfully bounced back from the twin dilemma of Melanie and Pip & Jane Baker (even though it took years). The Star Wars franchise, however, plunged into the Sarlakk's stomach with the arrival of Jar Jar, and its fans' despair will be slowly digested for a thousand years.

  7. Ken, that's the best summation of the "Jar-Jar Impact" I have yet read. Thanks :)
