Top Of The Pile: Batman #688

The Dark Knight has returned to the streets of Gotham, but Judd Winick's Long Shadows storyline, beginning in Batman 688, is simultaneously about Dick Grayson trying to get used to his new role and various other forces - on both side of the law - trying to figure out who this 'new' Batman is.

The gang war between Penguin and Two-Face rages on as the two master criminals feud for control of the city.

Meanwhile the police are pleased as Batman now appears to be more inclined to work with them, while Dick is having problems keeping a tight rein over his new Robin, the anger-driven 10-year-old Damian, Bruce Wayne's son.

The Batman: Reborn saga continues brilliantly across the board, particularly in the main Batman titles (i.e. Detective, Batman and Batman & Robin) and demonstrates how flexible the characters are to adapt to changing circumstances.

This is not simply a rehash of Marvel's Captain America storyline, but with a one-year lag, but retains the carefully crafted verisimilitude of Gotham city and its relationship with the Bat family. Every character is behaving in a totally believable fashion and I don't feel that any are having to be twisted "out-of-character" to suit the story.
