Pick Of The Pods: Adam & Joe
"Stephen!"
"Just coming!"
When new podcasts drop into my podcatcher I obviously can't listen to them all at once, so there no needs to be some sort of informal order. Some podcasts (e.g. James Melzer's Unleashed and The Game's The Thing) immediately jump to the head of the queue, but the one podcast that takes priority over all others is my weekly dose of Adam And Joe.
Some of it has to do with being roughly the same age as the hosts, but their wonderful, rambling, slightly insane, slightly childish humour just gets me everytime.
I've been a fan of theirs since I first caught The Adam & Joe Show in the early days of Channel 4, followed them through to their podcasts on XFM and finally to BBC 6 Music, where they present a Saturday morning show on the digital radio station - which is then filleted by their producer down to an hour-long podcast (sometimes longer, sometimes shorter).
The show boasts semi-regular features, such as "Text The Nation" (where listeners send in amusing stories relating to the chosen theme of the week) and "Song Wars" (where Adam and Joe each compose a song, on an agreed subject, during the week and then 'battle' them on air for listener votes).
Occasionally they also recount listeners' tales of "Stephen-age" (a call-and-response method of identifying other Adam & Joe fans when in large gatherings, which goes back to a story of a young boy's attempts to create an action comic about himself) or include a podcast-only segment called "Retro Text The Nation", where people who listen to the podcast rather than the live radio show, can join in with recent "Text The Nation" topics.
Adam is Adam Buxton, stand-up comedian, writer, video director and actor (he was journalist Tim Messenger in Hot Fuzz, for instance), while Joe is Joe Cornish, director and scriptwriter (he worked on Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret Of The Unicorn and is said to be co-writing a script for an Ant-Man movie).
If your sense of humour, like mine, still revolves around freeform playground silliness then I think you'd probably enjoy the Adam & Joe podcast as much as I do.
Being a BBC production only one episode is kept "active" at a time, but you can subscribe to the show's feed here.
