The Week In Geek...

A round-up of geeky news you might have otherwise missed...

(2) Lovecraft's Spectacular Tentacular Reach: A new documentary examines HP Lovecraft's influences and those he has subsequently influenced with his particular brand of cosmic horror.

(3) Straight From The Horse's Mouth: Long-time friend of HeroPress and gaming news guru Dane of War has published his first roleplaying supplement - 90 Phenomena In The City of Copenhagen - a 48-page book of plot hooks based in Copenhagen, Denmark.

(4) Definitive Guide To Zombies: The father of modern zombie movies, George Romero, is to write The Living Dead, the definitive account f the zombie plague, how it began and what zombies are capable of. It is due for publication in the UK in July 2010.

(5) Daring To Reopen: Having closed down in August, promising Savage Worlds licensee Daring Entertainment is reopening for business.

(6) Spider-Man Still Swinging: Troubled Spider-Man musical Turn Off The Dark is back on track, according to star Alan Cumming.

(7)
Watchmen Ultimate Cut: The five-disc 'ultimate cut' of Watchmen is coming to DVD and Blu-Ray in November... I haven't even watched my regular DVD cut of the film yet, grrrr!

(8) The War Restarts In March: Season Two of Star Wars: The Clone Wars will air in the UK beginning March 2010 on the Cartoon Network. Sky Movies subscribers will be able to watch the series from October 24 this year, though.

(9) The Force Is Strong Tonight: After the soaraway success of my Superman dressing gown, I've just discovered a soon-to-be-released "jedi's robe" dressing gown. Can I justify asking Rachel for a second dressing gown? Is that a bit excessive?

(10) Airboy Flies Again: A favourite from my early days of reading comics, Airboy, is coming back in January 2010.

(11) Patient Zombies: Yet more zombie figures from the brilliant people at Studio Miniatures; this time on a hospital theme (I do like the walking body bag!)

(12) No Who Reunion ForMcGann: Eighth Doctor actor Paul McGann dashes fan dreams of a multi-Doctor reunion any time soon.

(13) Whoops Apocalypse
: Check out these miniatures for Atomic Cafe 1957 - post-apocalypse wargaming in the style of 1950s B-movies with roving gangs and mutated creatures fighting for survial.

(14) And Now For The Science Bit: Speaking at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, Doctor Who writer Simon Guerrier addresses the "use and abuse of science in Doctor Who".

(15) Once More Up The Aisle: Quentin Tarantino is planning Kill Bill 3 with Uma Thurman returning as 'The Bride' for 2014.

(16) K-9 Creaks Closer: A trailer has been released for the dreadful looking Australian Doctor Who spin-off, K-9 (which really isn't anything to do with Doctor Who), with young Australian actors putting on fake English accents in a CGI futuristic London... Poor K-9, what did he do to deserve this? At least the 'real' K-9 is still with us in the Sarah Jane Adventures.

7 persons have something to say about this!:

Oh I dunno. That K9 wouldn't look out of place beside that new Doctor Who logo.

Perish the thought.

I read your comments on your blog about the new logo and I have to say that the first time I watched the video I thought: "WTF???", because it was so unlike the current logo, but I think it's growing on me.

I get your point about the faux 3D - but then 3D is the fad du jour sadly... I'm sure it won't be long until the BBC inflict a 3D episode of Doctor Who on us, heaven forbid!

As to K-9... I think the less said the better. I'll try and watch the show with an open mind, but everything I've seen so far is working heavily against that possibility!

I like the new logo. I never much cared for the old one but, then again, it was just a logo so not really worth getting bothered about. I like the colour scheme (black, silver, blue).

I have to say that I never liked the "old" new logo. I'm not sure about this new one. It's a bit "BBC house style", if you know what I mean.

That McGann story strikes me as a bit fishy. Remember, Billie Piper was allegedly never, ever, coming back when Rose got sucked into that void. Given that, I wouldn't be at all surprised if McGann and RTD (or more likely, Moffatt) have been chatting.

What I'm really keen to "see" is the new theme tune.

I want to know what happened about the rumour that McGann shows up in a flashback during the final two episodes as the 8th Doctor during the Time War. Can't even remember where I first read it...

On the logo, I like the Tardis effect, but not the Flash/lens flare approach.

On THE LIVING DEAD: I realize that Romero popularized the phrase and I guess he has every right to it, but this is the name of a great zombie anthology that came out recently (with at least one sequel planned), edited by John Joseph Adams (same editor and publisher as THE IMPROBABLE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES) and I wish his title was at least a little different. Oh, well.

About Me

My Photo
The Acrobatic Flea
I was a regular salaryman, earning a crust with my meager writing skills, until an aneurysm tore open my aorta unexpectedly in early 2005. I suffered a stroke during surgery and a collapsed lung afterwards. I have since realised that I now have a new chance at life, which (body willing) I shall indulge in with positiveness, happiness and the good companionship of my wonderful wife. The Acrobatic Flea handle comes from the name of my favourite - and most successful - Villains & Vigilantes RPG character in the '80s.
