The Week In Geek...

A round-up of geeky news you might have otherwise missed...

(1) More Lost Stories: Big Finish is producing a new season of 'lost stories' audio plays from the early years of Doctor Who, scripts that were written but never filmed from the time of William Hartnell (the First Doctor) and Patrick Troughton (the Second Doctor) and Sylvester McCoy (the Seventh Doctor). These will come out at the end of 2010.

(2) Dollhouse Dead: Joss Whedon's struggling show Dollhouse, already in its death throes rating's wise, has finally been put out of its misery by Fox.

(3) Day Of The Undead: Join fellow zombiephiles for 12-hours of flesh-munching zombie goodness in Leicester, UK, on November 28. Included in the events is the world premier of Zombie Undead and screenings of the original Dawn of the Dead (in HD), Pontypool, Dead Snow, La Horde and Zombieland.

(4) You'll Believe A Scrunt Can Fly: The reopened Olleys Armies Miniatures website is selling a retro flying craft for Bob Olley's range of wonderful sci-fi dwarves (aka "scrunts").

(5) Shiny And New: Killer B Games, manufacturers of the incredible Galactic Adventures In The Fourth Dimension Of The Forbidden Zone (or GAFDOZ) range of heroic-scaled retro sci-fi miniatures, has a new website, with shopping basket facilities etc

(6) Who Let The Dogs Out? Mongoose's Strontium Dog role playing game of mutant bounty hunters, based on the 2000AD comic strip, is now available.

(7) Huh?? Hollywood is finally getting the ball rolling on a movie about DC's iconic World War II character, Sgt Rock, but is not setting it during the Second World War! WTF?

(8) Eastwick Axed: The short-lived TV spin-off from the movie Witches Of Eastwick has been dropped by ABC before it even made to these shores.

(9) Marvel's Blackest Night: Monthly sales of Marvel comics continue to drop as DC dominates with five of the top six titles in October being Blackest Night related.

(10) Vatican Embraces E.T.: A recent Vatican conference has acknowledged that there may be sentient life on other planets.

(11) Roddenberry Acknowledged: Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry is to be inducted into the Television Academy’s Hall of Fame in January.

(12) Bringing Hexy Back: Serinda Swan is to return to Smallville as sexy magic-using babe Zatanna next year.

(1) Thanks to my new iPod, I've been catching up on Big Finish audios lately. I'm pretty far from it, but I do love the medium and am eating them up at a rate of around 4 a week.

(2) I blame the casting for my own lack of interest.

(6) Intriguing.

(7) WTF is right. At least it's not like the first time they tried to make a movie and cast Schwarzenegger and had the script explain away his German accent.

(10) This soon?!

(11) This late?!

(14) Yay!

(15) Leading me to believe that under Moffat, there may be changes to the line. I.e. targeting older readers...?

1. Very cool. I really like what Big Finish has been able to do. My only problem is there now so much Who out there that I'll never catch up.

2. No suprise, it was barely on life support.

6. I have never been a huge fan of either Strontium Dog or Mongoose, but I'll am going to check this out.

8. Eastwick was fun, but this is also not a suprise. I think in the end it was trying to be different from Charmed but also removed what made Charmed a hit (and at 8 seasons Charmed did pretty good for itself).

12. Great! More Zatanna is always better.

14. Excellent!!

15. I know! This will either be the coolest thing ever or suck so bad. I am hoping for cool.

Mongoose + Dogs: I've been burnt many times by Mongoose's crappy production, poor editing, shoddy writing etc - but I've liked everything I've come across (which is far from everything produced)for their take on the Traveller system, which - in turn - is a far better and smoother fit for their Judge Dredd line than the dire d20 crunch they churhed out some years ago. So I'm hoping the same holds true for Strontium Dog .

Moorcock's Doctor: As you may know I love the works of Michael Moorcock, so - as long as he puts his all into this and doesn't dismiss it as 'words for cash' job (not that I'm aware he's ever done this, I must stress) I can't see how this can fail!

The Acrobatic Flea
I was a regular salaryman, earning a crust with my meager writing skills, until an aneurysm tore open my aorta unexpectedly in early 2005. I suffered a stroke during surgery and a collapsed lung afterwards. I have since realised that I now have a new chance at life, which (body willing) I shall indulge in with positiveness, happiness and the good companionship of my wonderful wife. The Acrobatic Flea handle comes from the name of my favourite - and most successful - Villains & Vigilantes RPG character in the '80s.
