I've known about Record Of The Lodoss War for quite some time, due to my typical Western geek fascination with all things Oriental, but have never really pursued it too deeply.
What I knew was that a Japanese writer turned accounts of his Dungeons & Dragons games, in the 1980s, into first a series of novels (I believe these are called 'replays' in Japan and are akin to Western 'actual play' reports, but converted into proper literature) and eventually a series of successful anime and manga.
I have only seen the first episode to date - which I share with you below - but was immediately impressed by the clear Dungeons & Dragons make-up of the central party involved, namely a fighter, a cleric, a magic-user, a thief, an elf and a dwarf (it doesn't get more old school D&D than that!)
It looks like Record Of The Lodoss War is going to be my big 'obsession' for the first part of 2010. Expect more posts as I discover more...

About Me
- The Acrobatic Flea
- I was a regular salaryman, earning a crust with my meager writing skills, until an aneurysm tore open my aorta unexpectedly in early 2005. I suffered a stroke during surgery and a collapsed lung afterwards. I have since realised that I now have a new chance at life, which (body willing) I shall indulge in with positiveness, happiness and the good companionship of my wonderful wife. The Acrobatic Flea handle comes from the name of my favourite - and most successful - Villains & Vigilantes RPG character in the '80s.

5 persons have something to say about this!:
It's quite watchable, as I remember. I seem to recall that it just sort of stops rather than finishing properly, but it's been years since I watched the series, so I may be misremembering.
The DVDs were a lot harder to track down (for a reasonable price) than I expected, but a recent windfall on eBay allowed me to buy a new, sealed, box set from Greece... which is in the post as we speak!
From what I've found out there were several spin-off series as well, so maybe it was one of those that stopped suddenly ;)
The DVDs are on my To Watch pile. I may have to bump them up to watch them sooner.
What were the names of the spin-off series?
After the 13-episode Record Of The Lodoss War, we have the 27-episode Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight and the three-episode comedy Welcome to Lodoss Island!.
But then set in the same world is the film and three-episode Legend of Crystania and the 24-episode, but again more light-hearted, Rune Soldier.
Cool, thanks!
