The Week In Geek...

A round-up of geeky news you might have otherwise missed...

(1) The Vorpal Blade Went Snicker-Snack: Timed perfectly to coincide with Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland, Skirmisher Publishing has released an OGL roleplaying supplement inspired by the works of Lewis Carroll.

(2) Guide To Homebrewing: Scott Wallace of Critical-Hits.Com presents a "beginners guide to homebrewing" (roleplaying games... not beer!)

(3) The Shape Of Things To Come? A round-up of new series and pilots in the works that may, one day, become our new 'must see' TV obsession.

(4) Alien Vs Ninja: Coming from Japan this year to rock your world... need we say more?

(5) JMS Takes The Reins: J. Michael Straczynski, the father of Babylon 5, takes over writing duties on both Superman and Wonder Woman in July. Let's hope his stories get treated with a bit more respect than they did at Marvel!

(6) Being Superheroes: The brains behind the hugely popular Being Human are now turning their attention to superheroes with a new drama called Orphans.

(7) Felicia Day Sees Red: Geek idol Felicia Day will be playing a werewolf-hunting descendant of Little Red Riding Hood in the movie Red, which comes to SyFy in the States in 2011.

(8) Tron Legacy: Check out the first stylish trailer for this long-awaited sequel.

(9) Floatin' In The 'Verse: Actor/comedian Patton Oswalt is penning a one-shot comic, set in the Firefly 'Verse after Serenity, Float Out, looking at the aftermath of Wash's death.

(13) Proud Display: Writer Tony Lee reveals the cover of his forthcoming Pride & Prejudice & Zombies graphic novel, which is due out in early May.

(14) Gen Con UK Dead: Sadly, the UK version of Gen Con won't be happening this year - or anytime in the near future.

(15) Guardians No More: It looks as though my favourite Marvel title, Guardians Of The Galaxy, is going on 'hiatus' in April to make way for The Thanos Imperative. Let's hope this isn't a permanent 'hiatus'!

(16) Kick-Ass Signing: Mark Millar and John Romita Jr are signing Kick-Ass books at London's Forbidden Planet on March 21.

(17) Space 1889 Taking Off: Pinnacle's Savage Worlds version of the classic Space 1889 is heading to the printers and should be on sale early this Summer.

(28) Broomsticks At The Ready: The first scenario module for Witch Girl Adventures, The Pirates Of Buccaneer Hill, is now available in pdf format.

Sad to hear about GenConUk. I only attended one of them, 1998 I think back in the Wizards of the Coast days, at Loughborough.

I was helping demo a fantasy wargame at the time so didn't get much gaming done!

I did sculpt the trophies that were presented at Gen Con UK 5 or 6 years ago. I guess they are real collectors items now!

Personally I can only recall going to one at Camber Sands, many years ago, with Pete and Nick. But had always hoped to go back - Reading isn't that far from here (and Rachel's got friends there she could have visited) but I guess my procrastination means I'll never get to a Gen Con now!

6) Interesting. I can't help but feel that it's a crowded genre, what with Heroes (although that won't be around for long), and E4's superheroes-with-ASBOs Misfits, but if the writing and performances are as good as in Being Human.

12) This will make a nice counterpoint to the overly serious Delta Green, I think.

15) I think that's the end, sadly. We're seeing quite a few titles going on "hiatus" of late.

20) Still haven't seen the original. Not sure I will if they're Lucasising it already.

21) Er... why?

23) This strikes me more as a sourcebook for handling confidence tricksters than a game in itself.

26) This is interesting. The original was not great, but it had a lot of potential. I do wish they'd gone for more interesting directors though.

6) There's always room for new additions to a genre if the writing and acting are up to scratch, and like you say it's got a very good pedigree.

23) Having read a review it appears to be more of a Story Game makeover of the Cortex system (as good as a whole new game system really) with much more emphasis on Forge-style ethics than the original Cortex games.

Can't see it being a hit with Cortex players as it mucks about too much with the original system, but maybe the "indie games" crowd will embrace it.

Yes, I seem to have left my point about Being Human drift off incomplete there, but you understood my meaning!

About Me

My Photo
The Acrobatic Flea
I was a regular salaryman, earning a crust with my meager writing skills, until an aneurysm tore open my aorta unexpectedly in early 2005. I suffered a stroke during surgery and a collapsed lung afterwards. I have since realised that I now have a new chance at life, which (body willing) I shall indulge in with positiveness, happiness and the good companionship of my wonderful wife. The Acrobatic Flea handle comes from the name of my favourite - and most successful - Villains & Vigilantes RPG character in the '80s.
