Christmas Is Coming...

In case there's a Whovian on the planet who hasn't already seen this...



The first trailer for the 2010 Doctor Who Christmas Special (to be shown both here and in the States on Christmas Day), unimaginatively entitled "A Christmas Carol", was shown during last night's Children In Need telethon on BBC1.

My reservations about this now-annual treat have been slightly alleviated by the trailer, but I'm still unimpressed by the whole clichéd 'Christmas Carol' gimmick, which every television series and sitcom over the years has done to death before.

I have to agree with my old chum Greywulf though who pointed out to me - via Twitter - that at least this is a Christmas special that actually involves Christmas rather than just some snow on the ground!

    Apparently there's a lot more to it that just A Christmas Carol - the writers have tried to cover as many Christmas themed thing as possible, all in one story. Can't wait!

  3. Personally, I have nothing against a Dr Who version of A Christmas Carol. All the time travelling in A Christmas Carol sort of cries out for it.

    But, yes, the brief trailer makes it look like this is far more than that. I've enjoyed every Dr Who christmas special (some more than others) so I'm sure I will enjoy this one too.

    Also, the first christmas special - The Christmas Invasion - had killer Santas and christmas trees and has the Doctor enjoying a typical christmas dinner. Which is about as Christmassy as a Christmas Carol. Plus, the Next Doctor was set in Dickensian London on Christmas Eve.

I've tended to find the Christmas specials a bit flawed to date - The Christmas Invasion had the ridiculous spinning Christmas tree, The Next Doctor had the inexplicable cyberking rising above Dickensian London(which has only been recently sidestepped/justified by the introduction of the 'cracks in time') and the less said about Voyage Of The Damned The Better!
