HeroPress Is Dead...

... Long Live I'd Rather Be Killing Monsters!

My "Acrobatic Flea" persona is also being retired at this juncture, and in his place arises "Sir Timothy Of Kent"

After a suitable break, I plan to reignite this blog with a more swords & sorcery/medieval/Dungeons & Dragons bent - and less sci-fi/superheroes (for one reason, my passions are reverting to my childhood fascination with knights in armour, sword fighting, archery, jousting, the Middle Ages etc and, for another, there are so many other blogs/websites out there that do some of the things I was doing on HeroPress so much better).

I want to thank you all - official Followers, Facebook readers and casual visitors - for your patience and perseverance.

After four-and-a-half years - 3,273 posts - I can't just walk away or blogfade. I can only apologise for my rather public meltdown over the weekend (there were forces beyond Blogger at work, but that was the proverbial straw).

Although it may appear that this was a sudden bolt from the blue - I can assure you, gentle readers, that cogs have been whirring in brain since last year about a change of direction for the blog.

Well, not so much a change, as a tightening of the remit.

Unfortunately, nostalgia for a part of my youth that perhaps should have stayed in my youth (i.e. the resurgence of Villains & Vigilantes) distracted me from my master plans as I tried to recreate the incredible times we had playing superhero RPGs in our formative years.

If Monkey House Games hadn't popped up trumpeting the "resurrection of Villains & Vigilantes" (and I wish Jeff, Jack, Scott et al the best of luck in resolving their differences and bringing superhero gaming to the masses), I could quite possibly have stayed on target.

But like a magpie, I always have to have the shiny, new toy... and this new toy had the currency of nostalgia (and a very special part of my teenage years) to add to its value.

Sadly, for me, it only took several months for the rose-tinted glasses to lose their sheen and it dawned on me that, even beyond any issues I had with the rules set, the genre just didn't suit my personal ideas of the adventures and stories I wanted to take participate in.

At first I was determined to crash on through, but eventually, it struck me that my mind wasn't going to change and it simply wasn't working for me.

Let this be a lesson to you: you really can't go back!

I had forgotten the four key factors that make a game for me:
  • Exploration (discovering and mapping new lands, hidden underground realms etc)
  • Monster-Fighting (that is an interaction with the extraordinary, I get enough mundane in 'real life' which is why I like to escape into the bizarre and geeky)
  • Accumulation Of Treasure (not necessarily financial, but like Wil Wheaton and his dice, I like my exotic treasures to bring with them a story I can share at a later date)
  • Character Development (again, not necessarily increasing levels or hit points, but beyond the mechanic elements I need the character's life story to continue to expand and grow - like an on-going comic book character - with vibrant stories and anecdotes)
Of course, this wasn't all supposed to come spilling out at once. The idea was to slowly shift the focus of the blog more to what I wanted. However, this weekend's perfect storm of problems caused a mental overload in yours truly which resulted in the brainsplurge that has been recent posts.

And then, to add insult to injury, my Google account was hacked this morning as well!!!

In the meantime, there are scheduled posts that will continue to appear (mainly picture posts and video clips), but original content, reviews, articles, commentary etc will start reappearing in due course...

I shall return!

25 serfs have something to say about this!:

  1. It'll be interesting to see what you come up with now that you've gone and reincarnated your virtual self. I have to agree, broadswords are way cooler than spandex, though I prefer mine with a side of flint-lock.

    Good luck :)

  2. I really like the tone of this; you're forging ahead with a positive attitude, and that's good to see. I for one welcome our new monster-killing overlords!

  3. Thank you both (Rachel thinks I'm having a breakdown!).

I have plans already - and like I said above - I'm still going to keep the old HeroPress vibe, but it's going to be more focussed.

  4. Oh Thank God, I thought you might nuke this blog! Good forge off into another positive direction!

  5. Cheers, Needles. The nukes have been stood down. There's still going to be a break for a little while as I get my ideas etc in order, but I'm pleased to see that already people are happy with the new, positive direction I have in mind.

  6. But..but! Supers are awesome! :-)

But if you don't feel the love, do what works for you.

  7. I will eagerly await your return. (And I hope my Acrobatic Flea stories didn't kill the poor guy!)

  8. Always pays to change your alias every so often. Keeps those shadowyt forces off your tail. ;)

  9. Looking forward to following Sir Timothy!

  10. Looking forward to what you do next. I many not always comment, but I always appreciate what you're doing here.

  11. Just PLEASE don't delete your previous posts. We are losing everything lately and it's really starting to get to me.

But don't hesitate to jump into new waters. It's what brought me back :)

  12. As one journey comes to a close here at HeroPress, adventure springs anew and beckons you ever on over that blogging horizon.

So rattle those dice, roll up a new blog and see where the road takes you.

Thanks for all the effort you put into HeroPress. It was appreciated.

  13. @Theron - you raise a good point - supers can be awesome, but part of the "change" was driven by the realisation that my comic reading habits of the recent years have shifted away from traditional superheroes towards titles such as Hack/Slash, Morning Glories, Zenescope's Grimm Fairy Tales range, Charmed, Godzilla, Warlord Of Mars etc and these were the titles I was getting my inspiration from.

@Al - Ha ha, you're not mounting my head on your trophy wall just yet ;)

    @Trey - I wasn't paranoid, but now... ;)

@James, Joe, Chris, Nibs - thank you for the supportive comments. It helps confirm that I am doing the right thing and haven't committed some kind of hideous blogging faux pas.

@ADD - one of the things that curbed my anger with Blogger over the weekend was the thought that if I nuked the site, all my work of the last four-and-a-half years would be deleted.

Now I'm not arrogant enough to believe there's blogging gold in them thar hills, but I write this for myself as much as anyone else and I know I would have very quickly regretted not being able to go back and see what I thinking/writing/reviewing back in '07, '08 etc

  14. Hmm, I thought you said just last week that you'd be continuing with the Knight City stuff, that the V&V campaign was far from 'dead' and that you had "plans"?

I mean, it's fine if you want to concentrate on fantasy-based stuff (why not - I also loves me some dragons and dungeons!) but I start to wonder whether in a couple of weeks time you'll flip again to another genre. ;)

  15. Good call, Nimbus, and I stand by what I said. Knight City remain a WIP, but it is no longer my primary concern. Work will continue on its development, but at a slower pace, and that blog/website will remain active. I do have "plans" for it, honest ;)

You are the first to query my penchant for flip-flopping, but I'm hoping that the rebranding of this site will help curb my wandering eye (it's kinda a 12-Step Programme For Beating Gamer ADD).

  16. You might be Sir Timothy of Kent, but you'll always be Flea to me.

    :-)

  17. That's fine, just wondered. And, tbh, there's nowt wrong with flip-flopping. :)

One day (i.e. never) I shall run my game idea that's a mash-up of supers and fantasy (called "Defenders of the Realm" or something like that).

Anyway, first News of the World and now Heropress. What's the world coming to, eh? (not that I'm comparing your site to NotW of course).

    ReplyDelete
  18. @Whisk - I answer to many names ;)

@Nimbus - You know for a while (several months ago), I briefly kicked round a similar idea (Villeins & Vigilantes), but decided to keep the two seperate in the end.

Unlike, the NoTW, we're just undergoing a rebranding. HeroPress is still here (check the URL) just wearing armour instead of spandex.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I suspect the NotW will just get rebranded as a "new" Sunday version of the Sun newspaper. In fact, Sun On Sunday websites have been registered just last week so it looks likely. So, the NotW is not gone - it's just going to wear a different name.

  20. I enjoy reading your posts no matter the topic - supers or fantasy! I'm just glad you're sticking around!

    ReplyDelete
  21. @David - cheers, much appreciated.

  22. Tim,

Good Luck with the new direction. I tend to want to change things around quite regularly so I totally understand where you are coming from.

I don't know if the new direction will really appeal to me, but as someone with zero interest in the "spandex" side of things, I am not going to miss that...

  23. Thank you for the kind words. I'd have thought Conan, swords & sorcery, Game Of Thrones etc would be your sort thing, even if not the role-playing? Once I get my act together, the long-term plan is to get back into miniatures gaming as well... but that's a long way off yet!
