The Who Break Is Over And Winter Is Postponed...
A million distractions have prevented me from getting very far in my reading of the second volume of George RR Martin's Song Of Ice And Fire saga, so I have decided to admit defeat there - with plans to return to it at a later date.
Top of the distractions is the newly arrived Dawn Of The Dead novelization - by George A Romero and Susanna Sparrow.
Until recently I didn't even realise that George had written a novelisation of this most crucial (to me) movie. As you may have gathered, my "no new fiction in 2012" pledge didn't last long, but given that this is the film that single-handedly converted me into a horror movie fan then I feel I owe it to George to give the book an airing.
I have several other 'short' novels lined up to follow, with the intention of returning to A Clash Of Kings some time after the second season of Game Of Thrones has aired on TV.
Meanwhile, my state-mandated regular break from all things Doctor Who has come to an end as well, which will see a return of Doctor Who coverage and reviews to this blog. There are already plenty of DVDs to catch-up on and a wonderful array of future releases to look forward to throughout 2012 (even if actual new episodes of Matt Smith's tenure aren't due to arrive until the Autumn).
I find that taking a two or three month hiatus from Who every now and again gives me a renewed vigour for the subject when I return - and, obviously, my rekindled enthusiasm is helped by last week's announcement from Cubicle 7 that the Doctor Who: Adventures In Time And Space roleplaying game is back on track - with a number of new releases planned for this year (fingers crossed).
I have a few ideas in that general direction, but don't want to say anything yet for fear that it will turn to vapourware the moment I open my big, dumb mouth.
All being well though we should see a new (old) Doctor Who serial review either later this week or early next week here on I'd Rather Be Killing Monsters... and then a potential flurry as I play catch-up.

For me, the only way to "read" the whole series was to get the Audio Books and listen to them while on the commute to work. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteMy aim is to read at least one a year - which I think is manageable. That way I might also reach the end of the saga around the same time GRRM does ;)
Delete*Potential Dawn Of The Dead Book Spoilers*
ReplyDelete--
The only thing I really remember about the book was the revelation that the ghouls ate animals. Yes, the Night film showed one eating a bug, but that could have been a fluke. But the Dawn novel indicated they went for everything living.
Thanks for the warning, Justin. That's the kind of mild spoiler I can live with ;)
