| More Friar Tuck Than Robin Hood! |
I got to fire 10 arrows from a longbow (I certainly got better as I went on, but I think I'd have had more success shooting at hordes of French knights on the fields of Agincourt), after much persuasion I managed to get Rachel to pose in the village stocks and we managed to get lost in the maze (that stopped being fun after about 15 minutes of blazing sunshine and repeated exclamations of "we've just been along this section before"; in the end we tagged on to a mum and child who were being guided by her husband on the phone - he has already made it to the mound in the middle and could see over the hedges).

Agincourt was indeed a big and notable battle, but Crecy was a bit more telling about how much damage a well trained bunch or archers can do. http://shortymonster.wordpress.com/2012/07/30/to-be-an-archer-3/
ReplyDeleteGreat article, Shorty. I'm hoping to have another crack at doing some archery later this month at the Herstmonceux Medieval Festival (http://www.englandsmedievalfestival.com/) - to see if I can improve my aim!
DeleteI've got a mate who does LARP who's just moved from modern archery to medieval as a hobby, and can attest to how much extra work it is to pull a real warbow as far as necessary before loosing it. Glad you had fun mate, and I hope you get the chance to do it gain soon...
DeleteThat "extra pull" was one of the things that has previously put me off 'returning' to archery (I used to do it at school) - for fear that it would put strain on my aneurysm (I'm not allowed, for instance, to play tennis for that reason... notb that I could these days anyway).
DeleteSpeaking of LARP, check out my review that's popping up this afternoon.
Happy Birthday to Lady Rachel. Looks like a fun day.
ReplyDeleteWe had a great time, thank you, Ivy. It was lovely to be able to spend so much time together without Rachel having to race off to work ;-)
