Okay, you've had time to watch (probably several times) the new trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and fully digest its contents. But is it working for you? How does the general light-hearted tone of the new trailer stand-up against the more sombre original trailer. Which do you prefer?
Option 1 (original trailer):
Option 2 (new trailer):
Option 3: Both are brilliant, is it December already?
Option 4: They're not doing anything for me...

I prefer the first trailer, but every time some new bit of information about the films, I go off them a bit.
ReplyDeleteI prefer the first as well, although the second has a lot going on it really brings home that this is a "children's" book. So, what particular recent developments are turning you off the movies?
DeleteThe opposite for me. When the first photo of the dwarves came out I thought...oh no! This is going to be too comic and light-hearted for my tastes. What I really wanted is a prequel to the Lord of the Rings film with the same epic qualities. But both trailers have allayed my fears (somewhat)...it seems I might be getting what I wished for and I'm now pretty excited.
ReplyDeleteI still have enormous confidence in Peter Jackson (buoyed up by the brilliance - IMHO - of The Lord Of The Rings films), but I'm slightly concerned that the second trailer, in stark contrast to the first, makes An Unexpected Journey almost look like a slapstick comedy.
DeleteI just re-watched the second one because I don't remember thinking it was any more slapstick than the first when I first saw it. And I still don't really think it is.
DeleteThe comic moments seem to be mainly set at Bag End and so at the beginning of the film...much like LotR started in a more light-hearted sort of way in the Shire. And then things seem to get progressively darker as the journey goes on.
Okay...I worry the dwarves are still a bit too comic for me. But then they also seem to have their serious side...I love the song they sing at Bag End.
And then there's Radagast and the giant bunnies...wtf?
But all in all I think it will follow the same formula as LotR in starting off light-hearted and getting darker as it goes on.
I just get a much more light-hearted/comedic vibe from the second trailer (and I'm including "giant bunnies" under that heading), but as you say that could simply be the start of the story anyway (echoing Bilbo's party from Fellowship).
