Therefore my latest piece of housekeeping on HeroPress has been to turn off the loathsome CAPTCHA widget that was such a barrier to simple commenting. To be honest I didn't even realise HeroPress had such a system - it certainly wasn't something I'd have set up for the site and had clearly been set as a default "in my own best interest".
For the moment I'll also refrain from comment moderation (although any obvious spam will be deleted the moment I see it), as I feel that disrupts the flow of any debate that might possibly spring up between commentators.
So, the floodgates are open... let the commentating begin...
Listen carefully, you can hear the crickets...

I will say I am less likely to comment with these things turned on. If I can't get it after 3 tries then the heck with it.
ReplyDeleteThere are few things more annoying (in blogging terms anyway) than crafting your great response to a point raised in a post and then not being able to understand/read the CAPTCHAs ;-)
DeleteWord press has a nice system set up that does a pretty good job without captchas. Just have to go through the spam every couple of days in case someone's comment has been flagged when it shouldn't have been done.
ReplyDeleteBlogger has manual spam filtering anyway, so that's what I've always used when stuff has snuck through (which is also what made me think I didn't have CAPTCHA set up in the first place!)
DeleteI've got a blogspot which doesn't employ any captchas ro other protection and (for better or worse) no spam so far. I don't know if that means I look too small fry for the spambots to care, or what....but either way, I love it when I run into a captcha that looks like a Rorschach ink blot... !
ReplyDeleteYour time will come ;-)
DeleteI enjoy encountering the CAPTCHAs with Japanese/Chinese script (as shown above), as well as accents, fractions etc Hopefully they'll eventually go the way of the dodo and computers will be able to detect your robot status by the content of your message!
I'm glad you've got rid of it; it used to take me three goes sometimes to get a comment up!
ReplyDeleteYou should have mentioned it earlier - I never realised it had defaulted to that setting in the first place. Well, at least it's gone now... so I'm expecting lots of comments from the Law household now!
