Out With Old turned out to be a massive bait-and-switch, starting off with the Winchesters' tracking down cursed items sold from a second-hand store (a bit Friday 13th: The Series and a bit Warehouse 13), however about half-way through the episode Dean realised that something else was going on... and that they had stumbled upon a Leviathan scheme.
Once again, we see this season revisiting old elements of the show's mythology - this time the boxes used for safely storing cursed objects, from Season Three's Bad Day At Black Rock..
The brothers are drawn into the case when they investigate the bizarre death of a ballerina who "danced her feet off" (shades of The Red Shoes) - while wearing cursed ballet shoes obtained from the Out With Old antique store.
From there, the brothers discover a number of similar items, safely stored by the late owner, have now been accidentally sold by her son upon her death.
At the same time all the properties in the area are being bought up by a new real estate agency fronted by Joyce Bicklebee (Mary Page Keller)... who just happens to be a Leviathan.
Meanwhile, Sam has been "coping" with his Satanic visions by going without sleep for as long as possible, which brings its own problems.
The twists come so thick and fast in the last third of this episode that'll be lucky to leave without whiplash, but it would appear that after a very shaky start this season has found its footing and is revving up for a full-on finale.
If I have an issue with this episode it's the fact that the Winchesters just "stumble" upon a major operation by the Big Bads that, up until now, they have been making no headway in researching.
Next Time:

I didn't think anything was wrong with this episode of Sueprnatural at all! I can't wait for next week's episode after this. I finally got my coworkers at DISH to start watching it, but they still need to finish catching up before they can watch the new season. Thankfully, for them, I am going to record every episode with my Hopper so that they can watch the entire season after they do. I am so excited for the rest of the season now. I think this can best one of the best in years!
ReplyDeleteVery pleased to hear you've converted your co-workers to Supernatural.
DeleteMy problem with this episode was a very, very small one - it's just one of my pet peeves (perhaps because I watch too much serial TV) about character's "stumbling" onto the lucky break they need to solve a case (or whatever).
Although I would have preferred the Winchesters to have followed a Leviathan lead to the town, it certainly didn't spoil my enjoyment of this fine episode.
