Let's be honest, as much as we've enjoyed seeing IDW reimagine classic original series stories with JJ Abrams' new crew of the Enterprise, with the occasional single-issue character study of tertiary characters thrown in for good measure, this is the story we've all been waiting for... The Mirror Universe.
In Star Trek issue 15, writer Mike Johnson takes a brave, and potentially mind-bending, approach by setting up the Mirror characters we all know - Kirk, Spock etc - and then mixing in Nero from the last movie (Nero whose actions created the alternate timeline that is now the 'official' Star Trek timeline - for the movies, at least).
Whether these Mirror characters ever get to meet "our" Enterprise crew is uncertain, it certainly isn't a necessity of this story although I wouldn't be surprised if it happened down the line.
Nicely illustrated by Erfan Fajar, this is everything we could have hoped for from a Mirror Universe story, with a measured turn from Spock and wild, egotistical performance from Kirk at the core of the tale, here's hoping that after this story plays out it isn't too long before we return to the Mirror Universe.
