Today is the 20th anniversary of the first airing (in the States) of Deep Space Nine, which I intend to mark by watching Emissary (the show's first story)... for the first time.
I've watched a lot of DS9 in the last few years (discovering it late), but for some reason have never actually gotten around to watching the episodes that launched the show.
Oddly DS9 is the only iteration of Trek's TV outings that cannot be currently found on UK TV. Luckily, Rachel got me the first season of DS9 on DVD and so it's time to crack open the wrapper and slip those discs into the player.
There's something in my mind that ties Star Trek with New Years (almost certainly to do with the infinite possibilities that a new year brings) as I often find my thoughts turning to this franchise at this time of year.
It was certainly helped this year by a wonderfully Trek-heavy Christmas in the form of the stunning Star Trek Federation: The First 150 Years (from my mum), the Klingon Bird-Of-Prey Haynes' Manual and DVDs of the restored third season of The Original Series.
Even before I realised the DS9 anniversary, my New Years' resolutions had included an echo of my 2011 pledge of "Trek-up" my life. This is by no means replacing my love of Star Wars, but rather complementing it as both bring different aspects to my fandom.
